Streamlining Support for Family Care

Streamlining Support for Family Care

Streamlining Support for Family Care

This 5-week product sprint was part of the Build for Good 2025 community hackathon, organized by Open Government Products and the People's Association. Our team collaborated with Fei Yue Community Services, a social service agency supporting elderly care in Singapore, to tackle challenges faced by family caregivers.

Our goal was to identify core pain points in caregiving and design a practical, user-friendly solution to reduce coordination stress and improve the flow of information within family care groups.

I co-led user research with another product designer and worked closely with our product manager and developer to translate insights into a focused product vision, driving both the design and delivery of a functional prototype.

challenge.

We initially aimed to ease caregivers' emotional and cognitive load through direct mental health support. However, research revealed that while emotional strain was significant, addressing it directly through a product posed feasibility and viability challenges.

Through 20 in-depth interviews with family caregivers, volunteers, nurses, and community staff, plus secondary research on Singapore's caregiving landscape, three recurring themes emerged:

  • Fragmented Care Coordination
Essential information e.g. medication schedules, dietary preferences, care instructions was scattered across multiple communication channels like WhatsApp, calls, and texts, making it challenging to maintain accurate records or ensure care continuity.

“We use whatever we can... notes on our phones, notebooks, or just memory to keep track of things... there’s no one place to keep it altogether.”

  • Uneven Caregiver Burden
Care responsibilities typically concentrated on a single family member, creating unsustainable mental and physical strain.

"I handle most of the caregiving because I'm living at home with my parents. My brother does what he can, but he's got his own family responsibilities."

  • Barriers to Family Support
When family members wanted to help, the lack of centralised information made it difficult to quickly understand care routines, medical needs, or ongoing situations, often discouraging potential support.

"I want to help, but every time I ask, I need a whole briefing just to understand what's going on. It feels like I'm bothering everyone."

These insights revealed that coordination breakdowns were driving caregiver stress and creating care gaps. Instead of addressing emotional strain directly, we strategically pivoted to tackle coordination challenges, a tangible problem that could indirectly reduce emotional burden.

solution.

We designed a centralized, mobile-first coordination tool tailored for family caregivers. The platform focused on reducing manual effort, improving transparency, and making collaboration easier within care groups.

Core Features:

  • Shared Care Dashboard
All members in the care group can view real-time updates, tasks, and notes in one place.

  • AI-Powered Task Logging
Caregivers can record voice notes or take photos, which the system transcribes and auto-fills into care templates, turning casual inputs into structured actions.

  • Context-Rich Tasks
Each task includes relevant context, such as discharge time, medication names or meal preferences, reducing the need for repeated clarification.

  • Mobile-First Design
The experience was kept intentionally lightweight, making it quick and easy for busy caregivers to contribute on-the-go.

result.

We conducted user testing with 7 participants, including caregivers and healthcare staff, and presented our solution to judges and the public during the finale, receiving valuable feedback:

  • Caregivers appreciated having a platform built specifically for caregiving, rather than relying on general productivity tools.

I find this app really helpful for keeping track of updates about my loved one...unlike WhatsApp, where tasks and information can easily get lost.

  • The voice-to-text logging feature stood out for its convenience and reduced mental load.

The voice features are so helpful… I don't have to struggle with typing everything in English, and help me remember details from doctor visits.

  • Users found value in capturing and sharing contextual information quickly, which helped streamline coordination among family members.

takeaways.

Deep empathy research uncovered emotional pain points and practical improvement opportunities that surface interviews would have missed. By maintaining focused scope on family caregivers, we delivered a solution tailored to our core users' specific needs. The challenge was balancing simplicity with utility, integrating meaningful AI features that reduced manual work while keeping the interface intuitive and unintimidating.
